Romance Era Art
Caspar David Friedrich
John Constable, 1776 – 1837 was an English Romantic painter. He solely aspired to be a landscape painter and he was an excellent one. However, he was equally gifted painting portraits. He painted them when people hired him to do so but otherwise would have skipped them. We are very lucky that he needed the money for those portraits because we otherwise would not have them.
For his landscapes he concentrated on his own home turf of Dedham Vale, the area surrounding his home. Today that area is known in England as "Constable Country" and the tourist industry makes much of him and his best known scenes. Constable is famous for his clouds in his paintings and the detailed reports he wrote on the weather while painting. These notes are still used by scientists today.
Constable also painted seascapes. His wife was ill with tuberculosis so he had to take his family repeatedly to the seashore for her to get fresh air. As long as he was there, he painted the sea and seashore too. We would not have those paintings either if his wife had not been ill as he was perfectly happy painting Constable Country all of the time.
