An analysis of John Dryden's poem "Mac Flecknoe." This handout, which can also be used as a lecture provides the seventeenth-century political and literary background of the poem as well as an analysis of its themes. Much of the handout is devoted to the structure (plot) of this satire. Analyzed are the six sections, in many cases with line-by-line explication. Finally, stylistic aspects of the poem, its genre and imagery, are studied. An answer key is provided at the end of the handout on a separate page. Prepared by Professor William Tarvin, Ph.D., who has published many articles on literature in scholarly journals.
