Students will begin this assignment by watching the U.S. Presidents Series Video: John F. Kennedy (on YouTube). The video will introduce the time period and go over the key themes and events of Kennedy's presidency. The youth and hope which Kennedy brought to the presidency is first discussed in the video. The video then goes on to provide detailed information about many event's of Kennedy's presidency, including: The Bay of Pigs invasion, Kennedy's pledge to put a man on the moon, the Cuban Missile Crisis, escalation in Vietnam, and Kennedy's handling of the Civil Rights movement. The video concludes by discussing his assassination and the huge blow it had on the nation. Following the video, students will proceed to the History.com website and read a biographical article about John F. Kennedy. His privileged youth and World War 2 service are first reviewed. The article details his time in Congress and eventually the presidential election of 1960. The article reviews again the domestic and international highlights, and low-lights, of Kennedy's time in office. The article concludes by providing more information regarding JFK's assassination.
