This accompaniment packet is for "Grendel" by John Gardner. The mastery of this novel is that each chapter is guided by a particular philosophy and astrological sign. This packet gives the sign, symbol and philosophy of each chapter then asks the student to do the following for each chapter:
-identify the characteristics of the chapter's sign
-demonstrate how the sign, symbol or characteristic is relayed within the chapter
-key events or new characters introduced
-Grendel's evolving outlook on life
-definition of the chapter's philosophy
-quotes to support the philosophy
-questions students may have about the chapter
You can have students do this work for homework, group discussions or literature circles.
I have the students define the symbol's characteristics and philosophy on day 1 so they have that as a guide as to what to look for.
