History teachers, reinforce what students are learning in literature by asking students to examine tone and imagery in the song lyrics. English teachers, help your social studies colleagues by reinforcing some of their content.

Song themes include: mechanization's affect on workers; hardships for railroad workers; the rise of industry and how that affected women; music as protest.

This download includes a student handout and a powerpoint presentation with instructions and sentence starters for students to use during discussion. In the "notes" view of the powerpoint, there are guidelines for teachers using this lesson.

The lesson was designed for use in a 45 minute class period, with high school ESL students in a US History class. It could be adapted for use with upper elementary of middle school students.
