From Electric English...
This is a series of 5 KWL charts to use in conjunction with any John Steinbeck biography. I, personally, use A and E, "John Steinbeck" An American Experience", but there might be other great documentaries out there you have already found. This activity will work with any of them! If you do not own a copy, you can find copies on-line or check it out from your local library branch. The library, I find, always has a great selection of educational materials.
NOTE: This activity is designed for one week of viewing. The premise, here, is that you divide the documentary up into five equal parts over the course of five days. For example, if the video is 60 minutes long, you would watch 12 minutes a day until it is complete at the end of the week. This is great because it allows you break your class up into blocks of analysis. Once the video is watched and briefly discussed, you can move on to something else.
I, highly, recommend that you take a few minutes to discuss the student's findings as a class. This dialogue will really solidify their understanding and provide a quick formative assessment for the dreaded grade book.
If you do not want to structure your lessons this way or stretch the video as a 3-5 day activity, I would not recommend this product for you.
