This close reading unit has been designed around the book, "Johnny Appleseed: A Tall Tale Retold" By Steven Kellogg, although would go well with almost any version of Johnny Appleseed.

What's Included:

Lesson Plans- A five day outline with suggestions of ideas for a close reading routine of the book and daily writing.

Questions- After reading the book, use these question cards to check for basic understanding of the text. Questions range from level 1-3 on Webb’s Depth of Knowledge scale.

Appleseed Story Elements- Students work to retell the folktale in their own words and share a lesson learned or moral of the story.

Appleseed Fact and Fiction-Students work to distinguish between the facts of the story and the fictional events.

Appleseed Response-Students identify how Johnny Appleseed responds to major events and challenges in the story.

Understanding Genre: Folktales-Students work to better understand the genre of Folktale as a more specific type of short story. Students compare a folktale to a story. Includes Genre poster and comparison sheet.

Nonfiction Text and Text Features- Students learn more about he real Johnny Appleseed, John Chapman. Includes a caption and a timeline. Students answer questions about the text and its features

Appleseed Writings-Four writing prompts based on the book and one general writing paper. Includes self check rubrics.

Apple Craft- Apple and worm craft to decorate student’s writings.

Fact and Fiction- Reference posters and interactive anchor chart to help students understand that although Johnny Appleseed was based on a real person, many of the events in his stories are made up.

Fact and Fiction Hat- Pan hat that students decorate with 2 facts and 2 fictional events from their Johnny Appleseed study.

Johnny Appleseed Lettering- Use as a title for a bulletin board showcasing your kiddos’ Johnny Appleseed Writings.

**BONUS- Apple Science***- Bring your Appleseed unit into your science curriculum with this fun apple experiment. Students learn more about the states of matter, the scientific process, and how heat can change matter. All through making some delicious classroom applesauce!
