In order to get my kids to learn how to write a solid informational piece about Johnny Appleseed, I created an interactive anchor chart for us to use. It guided their writing nicely!
Here's how it works:
I asked my students to brainstorm what they already knew about Johnny Appleseed. They used the recording sheet included to jot down their knowledge. I recorded their knowledge on the anchor chart. I then read an informational text about Johnny Appleseed. While I was reading, the students wrote down information on the recording sheet that was new to them. After reading the text, students shared their knowledge and I recorded it on the anchor chart. We then came up with more questions that the children had about him and wrote them down on the anchor chart. The students then used the information from the book to write down all that they knew about him on the All About Johnny Appleseed writing page. While the students were doing their writing, I did more research on the internet about the lingering questions, to see if I could answer any of them!
About the anchor chart:
After putting the anchor chart together, I laminated it. To record student responses, I simply used a dry erase marker. You could also use Post-Its to record knowledge. It is very easy to maintain and use from year to year!
About the writing:
Some students had a lot to say! So, they glued the bottom writing paper to the construction paper. They then glued the top writing paper on top of that.
There is a simple apple craft also included in this product.
