Cross-Curricular Johnny Appleseed Activities for the Interactive Notebook
I created this pack to supplement your Math, ELA, and Science curriculum for Johnny Appleseed’s birthday on September 26th. Eleven different activities are included with sample photographs for students to see the final product. Several of the activities are differentiated for difficulty.
The following concepts are covered in this pack:
•Johnny Appleseed Mini Book with Questions-Please note that this book has a higher readability due to some of the vocabulary (such as Indiana, Native Americans, and Pennsylvania) and may need to be read in partners or whole group for some students.
•Author's Purpose- Write about the author’s purpose for the Johnny Appleseed printable mini book
•Main Idea- write about the main idea for the Johnny Appleseed printable mini book
•How to Make Applesauce- cut and paste flip book with pictures of how to make applesauce in the crockpot. Crockpot applesauce recipe is included. Extend the activity by having students transfer the writing from the flip book to paragraph format!
•Apple Adjectives- use the projectable page to brainstorm (whole class) a list of adjectives to describe apples after a taste test. Then, students copy the adjectives and create sentences using 5 different adjectives on the flip book.
•Seasonal Changes- Drawing an apple tree throughout the seasons to show how it changes and writing about it.
•Life Cycle of an Apple Tree- Ordering the life cycle of an apple tree and writing about it.
•Graphing- reading and answering questions about a given bar graph and creating a bar graph and questions and then answering. Please note that students will be creating a bar graph about taste testing red, yellow, and green apples so this activity will require the teacher to prepare an apple taste testing activity.
•Telling Time to the hour, half hour, and quarter hour
•Addition Word Problems- addition within 10, addition within 20, addition without regrouping (within 100), addition with regrouping (within 100), and addition with and without regrouping (within 100)
