Comprehension Writing Activities: Describing Johnny, Biography Fact Sheet, Facts Learned, Writing a Letter to Johnny, Fantasy/Realism and more.
Map Skills: U.S. Map (this is not the best quality but I made it for my class so I included it. It looks great projected but may not print clearly), Johnny’s Map—learning directions.
Two Biographies of John Chapman: Page 20-24 is an easier version . Students can illustrate the pictures. Page 25-28 has difficult text. I usually project this and we use various comprehension strategies such as re-reading, go back and look for facts, underline, highlight, etc.
Literacy Center Activities:
Compound Word Match (page 5-7) —Students match an apple card with a basket card. They can record their compound words on the recording sheet.
Fantasy(Tall Tale)/Realism Sort (page 14-19) Students sort the cards on the basket sorting sheet. There is a page for writing one fact and one tall tale.
Rhyming Word Memory Game (page 12-14) Cut out the cards. Students place them all upside down. They try to get a rhyming pair (one Johnny and one apple). They can record on the recording sheet.
Math Center Activities:
Help Johnny Find His Apple Tree Game Board—Students can use the apple spinner to practice counting or you could use math fact, spelling words, etc.
Fact Families, Counting Skills, Skip Counting—I laminate these and use them in a center.
Problem Solving: Students can use the ten frame and apple counters to do the problems.
