This download contains a biographical reading comprehension passage about John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed). Students will read a full page passage about the man to answer 5 multiple choice questions and 4 short answer questions. The short answer questions require students to recall information from the passage, use and identify context clues to define a word, and use information from the passage to describe Johnny in their own words. Students will also identify true and false statements by cutting and gluing statements. They will correct the false statements to make them true. Students will color apples to identify fact or opinion statements. A writing extension is also included, as students will write on the prompt "Johnny Appleseed was a very generous man.
Write about a time that you were thoughtful and giving to another person. OR
Tell about what you could do to give of yourself to help a friend.".
This passage and its activities are geared toward a fifth grade level. It can be a great resource to include Johnny Appleseed's birthday (September 26) celebration into your lessons for older children. Use as a homework assignment or include in substitute plans for the fall.
I have these activities geared toward other grades as well.
