This assignment is to be done while watching the Disney movie Johnny Tremain after the novel Johnny Tremain has been read. It is aligned with the common core standard RL.8.7 ( also matches for RL.7.7, RL.9.7, and RL.10.7) - I use it with my 8th graders, so I have it "aligned" with the 8th grade standard.
Students will watch the film and take notes in the graphic organizer of 5 similarities and 5 differences. They will then analyze the reasons the director may have chosen to keep some details consistent with the novel, and why they may have chosen to change details for the film.
When the movie is over, they will then take their notes, and begin constructing an essay. I have also included the directions and expectations form so students know what to be looking for while watching the film and why. Each paragraph is spelled out for them as to how they should be written. Critical thinking is very much a part of this assignment.
