This two-sided reading guide is designed for students to work on the larger questions implied through the sermon. It serves as a great formative assignment that will prepare the students for a class discussion. As students read, they will need to follow the use of figurative language and rhetoric to discern the brokenness of the puritan community. This assignment works best after a close textual reading of the sermon. I often provide copies the text the students can write on to notate their thoughts as we read. This assignment often is used at the end of the puritan unit after reading through several other pieces beginning with John Winthrop's "On Christian Charity". I'd be happy to speak with you about the sequence if you are interested. Please contact me.
