Objectivo: To use Spanish poetry to learn about an important historical figure from Cuba and will be Spanish poets themselves as you appropriately choose Spanish words to modify the poem and personalize it.
Together, we are going to learn about the Cuban writer José Martí and discuss the significant role that he played in fighting for Cuba’s independence from Spain. As a class, we will read the first eight lines of “Versos sencillos” (“Simple Verses”). We will discuss the poem and how it relates to Marti’s own life and beliefs. You will each receive a copy of the lines discussed, but with some of Marti’s words omitted; thus allowing you to modify and personalize the poem with your own words. While personalizing the poems, you will indirectly apply verb conjugation, agreement, and gender identification skills. You will practice reading the adapted poems aloud and finally record your poems on your computers to accompany your self-portrait.
