The photographer and I were high school classmates at Woodland High School in Washington County, Maine. We were also college classmates at the University of Maine. She has taught in Howland, Maine, since our graduation. Joshua Chamberlain was born in nearby Brewer, Maine, and he was one of the heroes at Gettysburg during the Civil War. His statue was moved from Downtown Bangor across the Penobscot River in the mid-1990s. It now is a part of a freedom park on the site of a former home used in the Underground Railroad. Used as a slide show, this can supplement any discussion of either the Civil War or the Underground Railroad.
The irony of Chamberlain's cause and the placement of the statue can be further explored in Andy Andrews' book "The Butterfly Effect."
