This is one of over 40 journal plans I have created. Topics include A Perfect Day at School, I Remember Feeling Sad, Natural Disasters and many more. With two to a landscape page, 15 photocopies can be used for an entire grade. Students glue the plan in their writing book, take part in a brainstorm session and follow the plan. At a beginner's level, it's possible to just paraphrase the modelled orientation, answer the prompt questions and bingo, they have a writing piece. A recipe for writing. Students learn to use the plan as it suits them. Their creativity develops as they learn to develop their own voice.
For this journal, I engaged the class by showing a collection of historical print ads where values were very different from today. They espoused the health benefits of smoking, used young children to sell guns, made sexist statements about women and made unintentional racist declarations.
