This resource contains enough journal entries for an entire year. I give my students this handout at the beginning of the quarter and they are instructed to complete one journal a week as homework. I allow class time to work on the first journal entry and give some guided instruction as students begin to write. I continually review the rubric to emphasize to students that all components need to be addressed in their journal in order to earn a good grade. I see improvement in their writing as the quarter is progressing.
You could also use this in the following ways:
*As a starter activity and then have students finish it for homework. *Allow the last 5-10 minutes of class for journal writing.
*A great resource to use for a sub folder. Students could select one prompt from the list and respond on notebook paper if you don't use journal notebooks.
* As peer work or group work/writing centers
Journal entries include the following types of prompts:
descriptive, explanatory, expository, persuasive, letter writing, creative writing and writing poetry
