These are the journals I have used for quite some time now to tie in with the Reading Street series.

I call them “Directed Journals” as there is a writing prompt on each page. My students do have other journals that are less structured and more open to the creative writing process. However, I feel that these Directed Journals allow students the opportunity to respond to the literature we are reading in the Reading Street series, and to practice the phonics and comprehension skills that they are expected to master. Additionally, I have tried to structure these journals to include text-to-self connections, so that the students are drawing upon their personal experiences to make the stories we are reading more meaningful to them.

These are six weekly journal packets that include 4 days of writing prompts for each of the 6 stories in the unit. I like to use Day 5 or Friday as a day for conferencing, grading, and student sharing. Also, Friday is sometimes a “Catch-Up” day for students who were absent or needed to finish a certain day’s entry.

As you will see, Unit One’s packet allows greater space for pictures and fewer writing lines. Units 2-4 have more writing lines and a smaller picture space. Units 5-6 are mostly writing lines with the smallest picture space.

Also included in each of these weekly packets are Teacher Comment pages that can be used as part of your conferencing and grading. I find these pages keep parents in the loop about what skills are being practiced and how their child is progressing with these skills. It is up to you whether to use them each week.

I have included blank pages that can be added to your journals if you have something special or additional you would like the children to write about.

In the Unit One packet, Self-Check Bookmarks are included for the students’ use in editing their own work. In Units Two-Six, Self-Check is included at the bottom of each journal page to keep students focused on what is needed. However, the Self-Check Bookmarks are still included if desired.

I hope you will find these to be useful tools in your classroom! I always get excellent feedback on these journals as they are such a wonderful way to watch student growth.
