  • The interesting Tic-Tac-Toe game design will engage your students and encourage them to not only write, but ENJOY have a little fun. The topics are vast. Some are silly, serious, thought provoking, and are seasonal to correspond with the month. You may use these prompts for an activity in centers, writing lessons, individual practice, homework, etc.


  • Differentiation will be a SNAP! Your students will select the journal prompts that work for and inspire THEM. To assist all of your students with writing success, multiple writing styles are addressed in this literacy activity.


  • There are several ways to make it your own. It includes 432 prompts. Enough to use throughout the entire year! You will find that each month of the year includes 4 separate weeks. I also included the months of June and July for you to send home with your students to continue practicing their writing skills throughout the entire year.


  • There are numerous ways that you may use this resource to ensure that your students have success and growth in their writing skills. Some ideas for you to consider:
  • - Use in a writing center
  • - Morning work
  • - Partner work
  • - Extra practice for early finishers
  • - Weekly journal prompts
  • - NO PREP homework

Tic-Tac-Toe Journal Prompts was designed for students to do three of the nine writing prompts throughout the week. I usually give students an optional ‘BLACKOUT” bonus if they complete the entire board.

The instructions on each sheet are as follows:

  • You are responsible for completing 3 journal prompts this week. Just like in Tic-Tac-Toe, the prompts must be in a row going across, down or diagonally. Put a check by each prompt you complete.
