Welcome to my Journaling Through the Year resource! I hope it allows you to have a journaling program that is fun, meaningful, and purposeful!
Weekly journaling is an excellent way to practice writing with your students on a regular basis. This resource is a year long tool that will help you get the most out of the journaling experience. Each month includes a title page and 12 “print and go” journal prompts. (3 per week) These journal prompts will practice many different forms of writing. On each prompt, there is a letter indicating what genre of writing the students will be practicing.
E – Expository
S – Sequence
PR – Personal Response
D – Descriptive
N - Narrative
Each form of writing comes with a “Helpful Hints” page for students to use as a tool to help them be successful.
For each prompt, there is a universal planning and picture page for student use.
The Writer’s Checklist page can be used for self monitoring and to promote editing and revising skills. This can laminated and reused for every journal writing task. The extra lines can be used to add an additional item to their checklist as you continue to teach different skills. For example, you might have them write “I used commas correctly in my writing.” This can also be used to help differentiate your Language Arts program. Have a student having trouble with reversals? Have that as the last item on their checklist. Have a student ready for a challenge? Have them try to add more complex sentences!
An editable journal pages are also included. This will allow you to add prompts that aligns with your curriculum or specific school and classroom events.
As we all know, assessment is a crucial component to writing. This resource is created with many tools to help make assessment easy, meaningful, and consistent.
Each form of writing has a rubric to use for summative assessment. With the use of the “Helpful Hints” and “Writer’s Checklist” pages, students have clear expectations and examples to give them every opportunity to be successful.
A simpler rubric is also included that can be used for a quick formative assessment that is meaningful for students. It will clearly show the strengths and weaknesses in their journal entry and how to improve next time. This rubric is very general and can be used across all forms of writing.
Prompts cover almost all of the SLEs for grades 2, 3 and 4 and the CC for grades 2, 3 and 4
