This is a memoir inspired by Keri Smith’s "Wreck This Journal." Many times we give students projects that we expect to be completed neatly and artistically, and many students are very intimidated by the idea of being artistic and they immediately shut down.
This journal will give all students, artistic or otherwise, an outlet to go against the norm. Some will be more creative than others. The cool thing about this download is that it can be used with MOST ages.
How do I use this memoir? I give a complete copy to all of my students and three-hole punch it. They bring in a 1” binder to put all pages in. You can give one page at a time or download all pages and give students the complete package. I will assign one page a week. Because I print the whole package, I let the students pick which page to do that week. This allows for additional creativity because not all pages will interest each student, or they will inspire students week to week depending on what kind of mood they are in. At the end of each week, I allow students to share. Some always share and others share when they are proud of what they created.
How many times have you caught students poking holes in their papers with their pencils, folding paper into little minions, doodling random designs, or any other “off task” type activities. Well, now is their chance to get it out of their system. This memoir will inspire kids and motivate them to “Think outside the box”, as well as inspire you as a teacher. Enjoy! Check out "Wreck this Journal" to see where the inspiration for me came from.
