I have compiled a list of 150 journal prompts for students in 7th-12th grades. Students in junior high and high school often do journal writing and the prompts can have more depth and controversy than those given to elementary students. Focus for pre-teen and teenagers centers around social concerns: peers; appearances; changing gradually from child to adult; and questioning values. The world outside of the home and local community takes on new meanings for teenagers.
Some of the topics I chose for journal prompts might bring in moral judgments and very personal feelings of the students. It is important for the teens to know that you, as the teacher, will be the only one reading the journal entries so that they may feel safe enough to write down their deepest thoughts and feelings.
Many of these journal prompts could be expanded into essays. Choose the ones you like and encourage your students to write on! These should be a good amount of journal prompts for a school year.
