After teaching students the basics of Inverted Pyramid article format (the article begins with a straight news lead and then is organized from most to least important facts and quotes with separate grafs for each quote and new fact), reinforce what you’ve taught and help them better understand the style and structure by completing this activity.
The worksheet attached has students do the following:
*Identify the headline & subhead
*Break down / analyze the lead’s content
*Analyze each graf (paragraph) in terms of length & content
*Identify and evaluate the article’s sources
I usually have students complete this activity twice.
The first time I give the whole class a photocopy of the same news article (this one has at least 5 sources, an exemplary lead, and many direct quotations). We then have a class discussion about the elements they analyzed and what looking closely at the article taught them about news gathering and news writing.
The second time they must locate an article written in IP format with at least three sources. This article may be found in a professional news source or our school newspaper. After identification and analysis, students share their insights in small groups and select the article they believe is the best exemplar of IP format with a strong straight news lead and thorough sources.
This activity could also be used by students as a way to analyze their own or a peer’s news article draft.
