This project is a fantastic alternative to a traditional test for a Journalism class. Ideal for middle school or high school, the project asks students to create everything from main articles, headlines, and editorials to a comic strip, classifieds and even a "Dear Abby" section. Students are also assessed on their ability to make bylines, captions and to adhere to the format of each section of the newspaper
I use this project with my own high school Journalism class and they absolutely love it. They are able to be as creative as they as they can in order to make a cohesive and "realistic" newspaper. I had students working in groups of two, but the project is very, very adaptable. Students could complete the project solo or up to a group of four.
