In Journalism class, we have a lot of “did you hear about…” moments where students share what they have heard in the news. As issues in the news become more polarizing, I felt that it was important to ensure students were not just jumping to conclusions about the issue or event, so that is how the Investigative Reporting activity came to be. It is a simple to use worksheet that would help guide students to research ANY topic from a legal and journalistic standpoint. My students love this activity, as it makes them feel like real, investigative reporters, and at the same time it is helping to improve their research skills, as well as critical thinking and analysis skills. The activity is very versatile and can be used for very intentional analysis, extension work, extra credit, substitute work, and more!
