Journalism is a favorite unit for our readers and writers for good reason- its high interest and gets them moving!. Many kids appreciate the formulaic nature of journalism and find it a relatively easy genre to write. This is one of my favorite units to teach to my struggling learners. With practice and support, students develop an understanding of the structure of writing articles. Since journalism articles are relatively brief, I am able to work on conventions with my students without frustrating them. Although this genre does not come naturally to my students, I wanted them to have an authentic experience alongside their classmates. This unit is the culmination of many years of work with my fifth grade students and was designed to help support students in classrooms where the TC journalism unit of study is being taught.
