Students in production classes work too hard to complete scantron exams. They create publications; they get it. Give them exams that are relevant, purposeful, and maybe even fun.
The level 1 exam asks students to create a portfolio that requires them to do several things: create a new full-page document about themselves, select completed documents to represent particular aspects of the course, and reflect upon how these documents helped to inform their understanding of class objectives.
The level 2 (production class) exam asks students to work independently and collaboratively to complete tasks necessary to close out the year. Students are required to enter contests, minimize their summer storage for next year, create a memory page, close out advertising contracts, etc. Each exam is individualized and for a different value.
