A staff manual is a living document that clarifies your staff's policies both in theory and practice.
Every staff should have a staff manual for several reasons, most of all because it protects you and your program by spelling out why and how you do what you do. In the face of challenges and questions, you can show that you have a plan and that the plan is followed.
Topics covered in our staff manual:
Mission statement, how content decisions are made, circumstances in which we would refuse advertising, how to handle student/faculty death, dismissal from staff, plagiarism policy, how we decide content, how our news cycle runs, policy and practices on our Twitter, Facebook alumni page, fan page, and closed group staff page, daily practices that - once on staff- are part of life.
Our journalism program publishes an award-winning newsmagazine that upholds ethics and professionalism as of utmost importance. We view the yearly updating and revision of the staff manual as not only a necessity, but a responsibility.
