The use of journals is a great way for children to draw or write daily, on a topic of free choice or one that has been preselected as part of your theme/content instruction.
While most younger students will start out by drawing, and will be somewhat limited with words, you can encourage the use of random letters to represent their writing from the start. As you slowly introduce letters/sounds and other writing strategies and conventions such as stretching/blending sounds, sight words, capitals, punctuation, etc., students will naturally begin applying them into their daily writing... a wonderful way to reinforce and observe the application of newly acquired skills/or content taught throughout the each month.
Journals also serve as GREAT assessment and progress monitoring tools! Hold on to them for the year and you (students/parents, too) will be amazed by your great writers!!!
Implementing ‘Journal Time’ as a settling-in/Morning Work activity can work very well! Students tend to arrive at varying times, and settle in to the day by finding their Journals and getting started right away! They also finish at varying times which provides an on-going opportunity to meet immediately with individual students and provide one-one feedback!
The set of writing templates vary in text lines, increasing from 1 line to 6 lines as your writers' abilities increase. The line spacing also becomes narrower to help refine the size of students' print. A picture box is included on all pages.
Not sure how to get started??
A model lesson will help you introduce the idea of writing and will also provide a student reference page to help them check their own work as developing writers!
Two blank word bank pages are included for students to record and easily access new or known sight/high frequency words, vocabulary words, etc. They can also be used by the teacher to write in new words as they are introduced. As kids develop mastery, they can check off the words and mark their own growth!
Two pages of common, high frequency/sight words are also provided along with check boxes to mark mastery.
All reference pages can be inserted right along with the journal pages.
