Looking for a way to get your students interested and engaged in geography and develop cultural understanding? Meet Journey Bear. He travels all over the world sharing facts and information with students in just minutes a day.
Each year I found that I had less and less time to teach social studies and my students had little to no understanding of the world around them. I wanted to find a way that would make learning about geography and the world interesting. That's how Journey Bear was born. At the beginning of the week I revealed the clues to my students and set the poster up as a research station. Students researched the clues and wrote their predictions on slips of paper placed into a box. At the end of the week I would pull a names out of the box, and we would talk about strategies for putting the clues together to determine the country where Journey Bear visited that week.
For the PYP, it's a great way to practice the attitude curiosity and being an inquirer (learner profile).
