I have achieved HUGE success with this tool! Students' behaviors will turn around! This student-centered journey log is a form for a student to complete when he/she is exhibiting a behavior that is not meeting your expectations. The student will go through a reflection process through this form, as well as set a plan to improve, and he/she will be required to have a parent signature. This works well as documentation for the teacher to keep in the student’s file for future reference if needed. Multiple journey logs for one student might warrant further consequences.
This resource addresses all behaviors, big and small. The small, habitual behaviors like forgetting important school supplies or coming to class unprepared, can improve through the intentionality of this journey log. Big behaviors that have not met the office referral criteria can also be addressed through this resource.
This should be introduced in the first days of school to set the expectations high for students to meet the expectations in your classroom, and this form should be continued as a consequence for the whole school year.
You will more easily win their hearts and engage their brains if you maintain an environment where students are following your expectations.
This pairs nicely with behavior management systems, like the clip chart method.
