This weekly lesson plan goes along with the common core curriculum map for 2nd grade: Journey to Freedom. It is the SECOND week in my Journey to Freedom Unit.
In this weekly lesson plan, students will be reading a biographical novel about Harriet Tubman. They will learn about her life as a slave and her role in the Underground Railroad. They will compare their life to the life of Harriet Tubman as a child. They will learn the meaning of the lyrics "Follow the Drinking Gourd" and write an imaginative narrative about their travels on the Underground Railroad.
By the end of the week, they are able to:
answer questions related to Harriet Tubman’s life.
explain the lyrics to “ Follow the Drinking Gourd” .
write an imaginative narrative about the Underground Railroad.
The weekly lesson was written around the book:
Lead Us to Freedom, Harriet Tubman by Peter and Connie Roop
**When I wrote this lesson, Scholastic Book Clubs was selling the book for $1. It is a very good book for 2nd graders. Scholastic has is leveled as a Guided Reading Level O. It is a very good book to read and discuss with the students.
You could read this book to students orally (1 copy of the book) and then have them do the response questions with you. If you want them to do some of the work independently, they will need their own book.
