This weekly lesson plan goes along with the common core curriculum map for 2nd grade: Journey to Freedom. It is the THIRD week in my Journey to Freedom Unit.
In this weekly lesson plan, students will be reading a biographical picture book about Henry Brown. They will learn about his life as a slave and his interesting escape to the North. They will identify the story structure by explaining the problem and solution of the story. They will also locate cause and effect relationships within the text. At the end of the week, they will write a short narrative and be able to give opinions about parts of the book.
By the end of the week, they are able to:
ask and answer questions related to the book.
identify the overall problem and solution in the story.
locate cause & effect relationships within the text of the story.
write an imaginative narrative.
The weekly lesson was written around the book:
Henry’s Freedom Box by Ellen Levine
You will need 1 book for each group of children to use while completing the activities that go along with the book. Students can work in groups of 3 or 4.
You will need only 1 book if you want to do the activities with them and model on the ELMO.
