Target/Academic Vocabulary Assessment Tool
One of the greatest factors influencing a child's fluency is their instant recognition of high frequency words. The following table can be used throughout the year to check for a child's ability to quickly read target/ academic vocabulary words from each unit. The list can also be sent home so parents are aware of the target words the child needs to know by the end of the year. The space in front of the word can be used for tallies each time the child reads the word correctly. I use a pencil to mark the paper. When a child can correctly read a word five days in a row, I put a smiley in the box. If a word is missed, I erase the tallies and we start our consecutive day tally count over again. When all the words in a unit are passed off, I time the child periodically on those unit words to maintain automaticity.
