Description

This supplemental pack is aligned to the Journeys 2011/2012, 2014, and 2017 curriculum for 5th grade. Upon opening the zip file, simply select the lesson that matches the publication year of your curriculum.

This Journeys Grade 5 supplemental pack is created to supplement Unit 4, Lesson 18 (The Dog Newspaper.) The reading responses, activities, and interactive notebook pages focus on the Reading Literature and Language sections of the curriculum.

ONLINE LEARNING: This Journeys pack now includes GOOGLE slides for online learning, compatible with GOOGLE Classroom. The link to the remote learning pages are on the second page of the resource.

PAPER & PENCIL LEARNING: This Journeys pack was originally designed as paper and pencil practice pages and interactive notebook pages. It can still be printed and used in this way!

These pages were designed to be engaging to students, yet rigorous. The fonts are interesting but easy to read, interactive notebook pages are included, and students are given opportunities to color and cut & paste. Students must have access to the text as they work, as many pages require text evidence.

Students love these interactive pages! Don't worry if you do not use Interactive Notebooks in your classroom. The interactive pages in this lesson can be glued onto notebook paper or construction paper. You can even staple a "notebook" of lined paper for them to use with their Journeys lessons! They'll love this new way of demonstrating their learning.

Interactive Pages:

• Fact and Opinion - interactive notebook

• Concrete Poem – drawing

• Vocabulary Definitions – interactive notebook

• Homophones - drawing (2014 & 2017)

Reading Literature & Informational Text supplements:

• Fact and Opinion – Students complete the graphic organizer, noting facts and opinions in the text.

• Fact and Opinion – Students evaluate sentences from the story, determining whether they’re facts or opinions.

• Analyze and Evaluate: Tricky Words - Students analyze their own understanding of the story. As they read, they note any tricky words they find. They use context clues to define the word and then use the dictionary to write the actual definition.

• Analyze and Evaluate: Book Recommendation – Students complete the recommendation about the text. They write about the author’s message, how an animal can be a friend, rate the story, and write about who may be interested in this story.

• Main Idea and Details: Web - Students write supporting details about the main idea, The Dog Newspaper. (2014 & 2017)

• Main Idea and Details – Students complete the graphic organizer, supporting the two main ideas with details from the text. (2014 & 2017)

• Flashback – Students describe the flashback in the text and infer the possible reason for using the flashback in the text. (2011/2012)

• The Dog Newspaper Text Questions - Students use details from the story to answer text-dependent comprehension questions.

• Poetry About Poetry Questions - Students use evidence from the text to answer questions about the poetry.

• Concrete Poem - Students study the example, A Seeing Poem. They write a concrete poem about their favorite after school activity.

• Essential Question – Students journal write, answering the essential question, “What do facts and opinions contribute to a story?”

Language Supplements:

• Vocabulary Word Wall Words – The 10 vocabulary words are printed in large, in black & white, to be printed and hung in the classroom.

• Dictionary Definitions and Sentence Writing - Students define each word using the glossary. Then, they write each vocabulary into a sentence that shows they understand the meaning of the word.

• Vocabulary: Context Clues - Students use context clues to complete sentences with the correct vocabulary word.

• Homographs - Students try to solve the homograph riddles. (2014 & 2017)

• Homophones - Students draw pictures of pairs of homophones. The drawings will show students how the words have different meanings. (2014 & 2017)

• Analogies - Students complete the analogies. (2011/2012)

• Spelling List – 2 to a page, to be printed and cut apart

• Spelling: Changing y to i Using Root Words - Students write the root word for each spelling word. Then, they write the rule (such as “change the y to i and add –es.”)

• Prepositional Phrases - Students circle the preposition in each sentence. They underline the entire prepositional phrase. Then, they tell whether the prepositional phrase conveys location, time, or other information.
