The process of making words is a research based method of teaching phonics skills. While it has proved to be an influential method for struggling readers, it is also a great way to teach phonics patterns to all young readers. These word cards can be used to practice making words with your students when teaching the phonics skills on Days 1-3 in the first grade Houghton Mifflin Journeys reading series.
In this packet are pages with letter cards for each lesson, as well as a page with suggested words they can build for Lessons 1-5. This word list is also great to have on hand for a substitute. Students can also use the letter cards to practice building words during free time or center time.
