The Journeys First Grade Reading Unit Summary is a set of charts I created to help plan and organize ELA (English Language Arts) lessons based on Common Core Standards. Each unit is summarized into a single chart organized by lesson that includes the following:
main title and secondary title with genre, comprehension skills/strategies, spelling focus, secondary phonics skills, words to know list, grammar skills, writing focus, vocabulary strategy, and imbedded science and/or social studies standards.
I attach the Journeys Unit Summary charts to the front of my filing cabinet doors to help me file activities and lesson ideas quickly. The charts serve as a quick reference guide to every lesson in the Journeys Reading Series. I also attach a Journeys Unit Summary Chart to storage totes. I have six totes, one for each unit, with the summary chart attached to help store activities, books, and games that are associated with individual units. As I begin a unit I pull the unit tote with all the extra resources needed. Then pack everything away. At the end of the school year when it is time to pack up my classroom, I pull out the six totes with the summary charts attached and store items related to the units back in the totes.
