This page was constructed in response to needing more phonics skills practice and review. It’s a very routine activity that works great on Thursdays or any day!
Question of the Day: How much of the 1st grade phonics rules do your students retain?
There is one page per story in the units for sale that reviews many skills taught previously and a small amount of the new skill.
Listed at the bottom of the page outlines the skills on the page.
This is to be completed as a whole group, office spaces up activity. Ideally, review phonics rules and post on board at front of room before beginning. I always remind my students- “Hints are on the board if you need a reminder!”
Examples of what can be written on the board: (just ideas-students can remember a lot!)
Short vowels: a, e, i, o, u
Ending ck: pick, sack, sock
Beginning blends: gr, sl, st, bl, sm, sn, sw
Ending blends: mp, nt, ng, nd, st, nk
Floss rule: puff, hill, mess, fuzz
Digraphs: th, ch, sh, wh
Long vowels: a-e, i-e, o-e, u-e, ee
Long vowel a at the end of a word: ay pay, ray
Long vowel a in the middle of a word: ai train, mail
I personally take a grade on this and my students are trained to constantly look for rules we’ve studied. They are amazing spellers during free write time.
This has helped with building a strong foundation of spelling rules. I hope you enjoy.
Please check out my units with a page per story- perfect for a grade or for that constant review of skills that is needed! :)
