Have you ever wondered why spelling tests are given as isolated words when those words are usually seen by children as part of a story they are reading or writing? Here's an opportunity to give your weekly spelling assessments in authentic narrative form. The assessments are dictated by the teacher as the students read along. When the teacher comes to a "blank", he/she provides the appropriate spelling word and the children fill in the story showing their mastery of the words. This set of assessments has tests and answer keys for lessons 6-10. Basal stories for these Unit 2 lessons include:
"Animals Building Homes"
"The Ugly Vegetables"
"How Chipmunk Got His Stripes"
Using narrative spelling tests allow the children to see and hear the words in context, providing them an opportunity to bring more meaning to the words they are learning to spell. I've used narrative spelling tests for five years, and the children love them!
