This is a collection of the five weeks of vocabulary words. I use this on day one of a new lesson in order to focus attention on the words for the week. Students begin by folding the paper on the first line and we echo read the words. While doing so, students will mark their paper with a symbol (star = I definitely know this word, check = I've heard of this word, but am not sure if I completely understand it, question mark = I have no idea what this word means!) In doing this, students know where to spend their time learning the questionable words. Sometimes, I take a survey for the most difficult words and put extra attention on learning them and using them in context. Students then identify key words in the definition using a highlighter, and finally make a graphic connection (either draw a picture to represent the word or write a sentence with the word used correctly). These are referred to as "refrigerator sheets" by my students and parents because that's the easy place to find and use throughout the week!
