I love reading quizzes! For every reading that was assigned, my students knew there would be an open-notebook reading quiz to follow. I asked not about the pointless minutiae but of specific details that students could then apply in their writing of the text as a whole, be it a cultural analysis or character explication. I recommend posting the quiz on the Smart Board after you've collected student responses and then using the quiz itself to generate discussions on the text. I also asked my students if the questions were pointless or helped to generate deeper understanding; their responses helped me refine and revise my quizzes. If you do so with your students and they find the questions stupid, please feel free to tell them "some guy from Jersey put them online." Have fun!
