From Electric English...
This is an annotation and close reading activity intended to lead discussion about an excerpt from the article, "Teen Tracking Apps: Good Parenting or Risky?". The assignment, not only asks students to annotate, but also to evaluate the meaning of the article using the SOAPSTone method. A discussion about teenage privacy and the balance that parents must find with their children pairs very well with Oates' story "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?". Whether you or your students agree with the opinions set forth in the essay is immaterial, in fact, hopefully there will be a wide range of opinions about the text to facilitate discussion. I was surprised by some of the insightful comments my students made when asked to consider this material; hopefully, you will be too :)
NOTE: There is a fresh, clean copy of this story posted in my store under Short Story: Analysis Project. It's free and a great story!! I have to tell you, however, that this story is quite disturbing on many levels. Just want to give you fair warning, in case, you are not familiar with it.... That being said, every time I have ever taught this story, the students have loved it, and it has always generated some incredible conversations about a teenager's life and the story's analysis.
