This is an activity to analyze "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" by Joyce Carol Oates using the DIDLS method :) It asks the students to consider the diction, images, details, language, and syntax or a piece and then use that information to determine attitude and tone. It can be applied to fiction or non-fiction, and all kids benefit from its organization. This is typically an AP strategy, but I think that's a bunch of bologna... I use it for all of my classes and all of my students; it takes a little longer with some classes versus others, but asking your students to contemplate these types of questions about their reading only enhances their criticial thinking and life skills. Use it however is best for you :)
NOTE: There is a fresh, clean copy of this story posted in my store under Short Story: Analysis Project. It's free and a great story!! I have to tell you, however, that this story is quite disturbing on many levels. Just want to give you fair warning, in case, you are not familiar with it.... That being said, every time I have ever taught this story, the students have loved it, and it has always generated some incredible conversations about a teenager's life and the story's analysis.
NOTE: This activity presupposes prior knowledge. I would not recommend it unless you have already familiarized your students with diction and syntax.
