From Electric English...
This is an activity designed for the close reading of Oates' "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" Specifically, the students are asked to consider the syntax and style of the piece. This activity is a great reference for the students as they continue to hone their close reading skills. With activities such as these, students begin to understand the layers of reading strategies. They are aware of the importance of word choice, and now with this activity; they are exposed to the idea that sentence structure, punctuation, and grammar can play a huge part in understanding an author's intent and purpose... That being able to recongnize a writer's style will contribute to their own knowledge and learning.
NOTE: There is a fresh, clean copy of this story posted in my store under Short Story: Analysis Project. It's free and a great story!! I have to tell you, however, that this story is quite disturbing on many levels. Just want to give you fair warning, in case, you are not familiar with it.... That being said, every time I have ever taught this story, the students have loved it, and it has always generated some incredible conversations about a teenager's life and the story's analysis.
