Have you ever wondered if there was a better way to assess your students in History? RE-thinking assessment. This is a high-quality assessment based on historical thinking skills. Instead of a multiple choice test about content, students show the ability to perform historical thinking skills. This assessment is looking at two historical thinking skills as defined by the American Historical Association: Chronological Thinking and Historical Research Skills.

Rather than the old method of hearing history, these assessments are focused on students DOING history. There is a historical research component that allows students to investigate aspects of the topic that they are interested in. Also, students investigate assessment AS learning when they self-assess themselves based on the project. Students take ownership when they realize how they are being graded.

In this assessment:
Students use event cards about 20 important events in Judaism & Christianity to fill out a graphic organizer.
Students organize the events into a timeline.
Students complete an independent research project based on interests.
Students self-assess with descriptions on the rubric included. The students then grade for quality of work.

This is a different way of assessing students based on skills. The content standard is to accurately identify important dates and events of Judaism & Christianity. The rubric provided assesses students on the historical thinking skills: Chronological Thinking, Historical Research Skills, Self-Assessment, and accuracy of historical knowledge. The Essential Question that this Assessment helps answer is: "How did Judaism & Christianity become two of the major religions today?

I hope that you enjoy this product. I know that my students really appreciate relevant historical learning. In this assessment students are able to learn about two major world religions, and investigate any interests that they have. When it comes to learning history, there is no better way than to DO history!
