A reading passage with concept map for organization for basic information about the case of Marbury v Madison and the principle of judicial review, concept map also includes spot for current examples of judicial review
My "hook" is to show video or pics of Americans burning the American flag. I have students in their own spirals write an explanation of why they think this is illegal or not.
I then have them do the reading along with the concept map, either in their spirals or on their ipads.
We then wrap up by talking about current examples of judicial review and we discuss that burning the flag isn't actually illegal according to the Johnson v Texas case, etc.
Basic activity to cover the important material in Marbury v. Madison.
Extension activity could be to later come back after Jackson's response to Worcester v Georgia and Lincoln's response to ex parte merryman and discuss presidential responses to judicial review with the students.
