A two-day unit about the Madrid train bombings of 2004, including the song Jueves (11 de marzo) by La Oreja de VanGogh
This lesson includes:
-a detailed lesson plan
-a pre-listening song activity
-a PowerPoint for pre-teaching vocab for the song
-a Cloze listening activity for the song
-two reading comprehension activities for the #authres article (one for intermediate
levels and one for advanced)
-links to the necessary videos and article
This lesson might be used around September 11th to make cultural comparisons, or around March 11th, the anniversary of the Madrid train bombings. It could be used at other times of the year as well. It is most appropriate for levels III, IV or AP.
This lesson is one of my favorites to teach. The song appeals to my horrible taste in sappy love songs. However, the lesson is structured with a twist. Students groan when they think that you are playing just another cheesy love song for them, but after reading the article (#authres) they realize the true meaning of the song and they gain some cultural perspective in the process.
