This activity gets students excited to hunt for "juicy words" and to move away from dull and overused words like "sad" and "good". Each student (or pair of students) gets one copy of this sheet. You can supply them with a word or have students choose from a hat. Their job is to define the word and to use a thesaurus and/or online resources to find synonyms for their word in varying degrees. For example- if the word is "bad" students will need to find several words that mean sort of bad (awful, unpleasant...) and several that mean very bad (catastrophic, horrendous...). When they are ready to publish, they can pose for a picture of themselves using facial expressions to show the meaning of their word. I keep this up on the wall all year for students to use whenever they are writing and want to pick exciting language.
