My Alberta Classroom is offering a free student vocabulary builder to guide students in gathering juicy words as alternatives to over-used, boring ones. Students are required to find more interesting words to replace those listed. In the end, each student adds this list to their personal dictionary/word book, as a writing tool. During writing activities, students will then have a wealth of strong word choices for making their writing more interesting for their readers!
Can be used as a homework assignment, in a literacy or word work station, or as an independent or cooperative learning task.
I have included an example of what a completed sheet might look like, once students have found alternatives. Students print their words directly onto their sheet. I have typed an example sheet, that includes a few words in each section, for teacher reference only. This example will not necessarily have the same words as your students will come up with, as this is a personalized task and words will differ among students. This is fine, as long as the alternatives are indeed strong replacements for the given "boring words". We usually take time to share our words and discuss them, before adding them to our personal vocabulary books.
