Students love finding a series of books that they enjoy so that they can experience adventures with their favorite characters again and again. This document consists of two novel studies combined for the Julian series by Ann Cameron. The books covered include The Stories Julian Tells (13 page packet) and Julian, Secret Agent (12 page packet). My third graders love these books, and they're very engaging for my students reading below grade level. Both novel studies review Common Core skills like visualizing, making connections, answering text-based questions, responding to the text, and point-of-view.
To prepare novel studies for my students, I always do ability grouping for books and then make into a booklet by stapling between construction paper or copying onto colored paper. With my Julian group, I discussed each page for each chapter that we went through everyday, but the students finished it on their own and then came back and shared at the end of center time. My students were really engaged by both studies, and I hope that yours will be, too!
